Nineteen-year-old Kyle Thomas was yesterday hailed as a hero and honoured after risking his life to save a group of people who were drowning at Maracas Bay on July 2.
Two people died in that tragedy —Premchand Ramlal, 50, of Fyzabad, and Sandra Singh, 53, of Penal.
The lone survivor, whom Thomas was able to get to first, has been identified as Canadian national Ron Rampersad.
Thomas, a Maracas resident, was honoured at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port of Spain yesterday, at which Fr Carl Williams conducted regular midday mass. In attendance were Trinity College acting principal/national rifle coach Carl Tang, from Thomas’ alma mater, and the Holy Trinity family.
Maracas resident Bernadine Pardassee, 56, fondly known as “Aunty Berns”, said: “ Kyle is a humble young man. You don’t see him liming by the road. He is positive. We are proud of him. He is our hero.”
